Eleven in Motion

Eleven in Motion: Abstract Expressions in Animation, world premiere of eleven new animated works inspired by the art of the Painters Eleven.

Toronto, ON October 26, 2009 – The Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS) in conjunction with Cinematheque Ontario and Christopher Cutts Gallery, is pleased to announce the premiere of Eleven in Motion: Abstract Expressions in Animation, a commissioning project of eleven new animated works inspired by the art of the Painters Eleven. The premiere screening takes place November 11, 2009, 8 PM at the Cinematheque Ontario and will be attended by all eleven filmmakers from across Canada. The screening is free to the public.

The eleven animators whose works will be featured at the premiere include Rick Raxlen, Patrick Jenkins, Élise Simard, Richard Reeves, Nick Fox-Gieg, Félix Dufour-Laperrière, Ellen Besen, Steven Woloshen, Pasquale LaMontagna, Craig Marshall and Lisa Morse.

Following the premiere, the new animated works, alongside paintings by the Painters Eleven, will be on display at the Christopher Cutts Gallery from November 18 – 25, 2009. The gallery opening takes place November 18, 2009, 6 to 9 PM.

Representing a high point in Canadian art history, the Painters Eleven was a group of abstract painters who banded together in Toronto in the fifties, believing that a unified front would better serve them in their quest to exhibit their work. Painters Eleven would become an influential group in Canadian art history whose influence is still felt to this very day. Eleven in Motion is both a tribute to their contributions and a gathering point for eleven Canadian animators to create works inspired by these pioneering artists.
